U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - Registers' certificates, 1811-1829.

When public lands were sold at auction the purchaser paid the Receiver and obtained a receipt which was presented to the Register. The Register noted the tract as sold and presented a certificate to the purchaser which confirmed the sale and the schedule of future payments. This series consists of Registers' certificates from early land sales at the St. Stephen's Land Office. The majority of the certificates are printed and include the following information: certificate number, date, purchaser's name and county of residence, tract location, number of acres, price per acre, total amount due, amount paid in purchase money, and a schedule for future payments. The certificates are signed by the St. Stephen's Register. Some of the earlier certificates are entirely handwritten. Many contain notes about subsequent payments and sometimes related items such as affadavits and surveys are included.
